Childhood Friend

A childhood friend of mine died, he killed himself
I remember him as a talented artist who passed
His caricature cartoons to me in Latin class
And from a hunk of cherry wood he carved
A pipe in the shape of a human skull held by a boney hand
We filled the bowl with fragrant reefer
And drew the acrid smoke through the forearm bone
It passed from mouth to mouth, around those ceremonial circles
Where incantations were uttered
In that long forgotten tongue
